Past Trips to Picklesiemer, John Rock
and neighboring Looking Glass Rock

These easily accessible locations, all near Brevard NC in the Pisgah National Forest and all within close proximity to each other, have always been favorites of ours. Although crowds can be a problem on summertime weekends, we have found the area perfect for short trips into the woods or "off season" adventures.

In October 1995 Robin's on the edge of John Rock looking over at Looking Glass Rock

On that same trip we took in the view from John Rock of Devil's Courthouse covered by Balsam trees at center

Dennis in this 1989 picture from Looking Glass viewing south frames John Rock directly to his right
and Cedar Rock Knob at center. Picklesiemer is at the foot of the long ridge just right of center.

This view north from First Ledge on Looking Glass catches the profile of the Northwest Face of the rock.

The same profile seen from below on the Slickrock Trail in 1991

The trip to the Slickrock Trail was in the dead of winter. The tarps protected us somewhat from the sleet.

But sometimes the sleet would stop and the silent woods revealed their beauty.

The sunsets from First Ledge could sometimes set the sky afire, this in 1990 on a cold January evening.

In the summer of 1991 we camped at Picklesiemer for a week. Here Tammy and her girls finish breakfast with Simon.

Brian's family joined us for the campout as well, as did Bruce and Dennis ....

Tammy and Simon cut up in the grass of the "back" meadow at Picklesiemer.

We spent a great deal of time playing in the creek at the falls just below Picklesiemer.

A pastime Simon and I also indulged in on our trip on Father's Day in 1994

Over the years this has been the scene of many, many "impulse" trips. We've camped out in the cave under Slickrock Falls when the water was frozen like a glass wall in front of us, we've stayed on top of Looking Glass at zero degree temperatures where the water bottles froze solid, we've seen a satellite fall to earth during a dark starry night from First Ledge and spent days and days frolicking in the "back" meadows at Picklesiemer. This field was once a CCC Camp during the depression of the 30s but nothing of that remains except the meadows themselves.
